What Is Renzo Protocol?

Renzo Protocol is a liquid restaking protocol built on EigenLayer that allows ETH stakers to restake their ETH (or liquid staking tokens like stETH) through Renzo and receive ezETH — a liquid restaking token representing their restaked position plus accumulated staking and restaking rewards. EigenLayer enables Ethereum validators to extend their security guarantees to additional services (Actively Validated Services, or AVSs) beyond Ethereum consensus itself, earning additional yield from AVS fees in exchange for additional slashing risk. Renzo abstracts the complexity of direct EigenLayer participation by managing operator delegation, AVS selection, and risk management on behalf of ezETH holders — users deposit and receive ezETH without needing to understand EigenLayer's technical architecture.

The liquid restaking sector emerged rapidly in 2024 as EigenLayer launched mainnet and protocols competed to accumulate restaked ETH. The liquid restaking sector's growth dynamics are closely tied to EigenLayer's AVS ecosystem maturation. As more AVSs launch and begin paying meaningful security fees to operators (and by extension to restakers), the yield differential between simple ETH staking and restaking expands — attracting more depositors to protocols like Renzo. Conversely, if AVS fee revenue remains modest relative to the additional slashing risk of restaking, the yield premium may not justify the risk for conservative depositors.
